An Insider's Guide to Narcissism Event Details:

Narcissism is a personality disorder that has gained a lot of press in the past several years. Whether we are questioning the possible diagnosis of the leader of the free world or predicting the development of the disorder in social-media obsessed teens, it seems like lay people and professionals cannot stop talking about narcissism.

We often use the term narcissist to loosely describe people who are overly self-absorbed or arrogant, but the clinical presentation of narcissism is much more complex and rare. Kristin Daley, PhD and Jennifer Fights, LPC are members of the WiseMinds DBT team at Southeast Psych, and each have special experience working with this particular personality disorder.

This continuing education event will focus on the complexity of narcissism from many different angles to its presentation. We will start with the beginning, by going through the theoretical models of how narcissism develops in individuals, from trauma exposure to over-indulgent parenting.

We will evaluate the consistent theories and include some of the manifestations of narcissism in popular culture. Treatment models for narcissism will be thoroughly detailed, as well as prognosis and empirical validation of treatments.

Lastly, tools essential for family members coping with this personality disorder will be discussed including some creative approaches to soften the impact on family members. Case studies from clinical experience will be utilized throughout the presentation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to fully discuss the predisposing factors for the development of narcissistic personality disorder.

  2. Participants will be able to describe the environmental factors that contribute to the expression of narcissistic personality disorder.

  3. Participants will be able to list the common treatments utilized for narcissistic personality disorder and the empirical evidence supporting these treatments.
