Event description

Description

Venue: Jack Morton Auditorium, George Washington University, 805 21 St. NW

Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Reception: 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

In 1964, three Civil Rights activists – Annie Devine, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Victoria Jackson Gray – were among the founders of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, organized to challenge the established power of the state’s Democratic Party. Participation was only allowed for whites, when African-Americans made up 40% of the state population.

In the face of unrelenting violence and economic oppression, the three women ran on the primary ballot as congressional candidates on the MFDM ticket against the main Democratic Party candidates. They later contested the election of the Democratic Party candidates and in 1965 were called to Congress to give depositions which were transcribed for the Congressional Record.

To illuminate this untold story, MOWFF and NEWorks Productions proudly present a workshop of this new American musical (in development).

Devine, Hamer, Gray

Composed and directed by Nolan Williams, Jr. as creator of The Work and “NEWorks Productions” as co-presenter.
