Event description

Description

Featuring Dr. Adam Clark.

“There is something in every one of you that waits and listens for the sound of the genuine in yourself. It is the only true guide you will ever have. And if you cannot hear it, you will all of your life spend your days on the ends of strings that somebody else pulls.”

― Howard Thurman

Join us for a contemplative dialogue on the mystical-prophetic with Dr. Adam Clark, professor of Christian Theology at Xavier University. This two hour session will include featured readings from the late philosopher and African American leader, Howard Thurman. Thurman's theology of radical nonviolence influenced, and his quest for common ground shaped, a generation of civil rights activists. He was a key mentor to leaders within the movement, including Martin Luther King, Jr. Adam will walk us through a couple of readings from Thurman, discussions on its relevance to contemporary issues of race, selfhood, and political formation, and he will guide us in practices of transformation.

Adam Clark, Associate Professor of Theology at Xavier University, is committed to the idea that theological education in the twenty first century must function as a counter-story. One that equips students to read against the grain of the dominant culture and inspires them to live into the Ignatian dictum of going forth “to set the world on fire.” He currently serves as co-chair of Black Theology Group at the American Academy of Religion, actively publishes in the area of black theology and black religion and participates in social justice groups at Xavier and in the Cincinnati area.

Contemplative Mornings are hosted by Hive founder, Troy Bronsink, and include discussion, guided meditation, and group dialogue as well as coffee and refreshments.

Doors open at 7:30: event runs from 8-10am.

Coffee and pastries provided.
