Event description

Description

For our very first meetup, we are excited to be joined by Ravi Gupta, Solutions Engineer at Mesosphere. Ravi will be discussing the SMACK Stack (Spark, Mesos, Akka, Cassandra and Kafka) and give an overview of DC/OS (the Data Center Operating System) which is an open-source, distributed operating system based on the Apache Mesos distributed systems kernel. He'll also then go into a brief demo on how these things all work together.

AGENDA:

1) Overview of DCOS:

• DC/OS (the datacenter operating system) is an open-source, distributed operating system based on the Apache Mesos distributed systems kernel. DC/OS manages multiple machines in the cloud or on-premises from a single interface; deploys containers, distributed services, and legacy applications into those machines; and provides networking, service discovery and resource management to keep the services running and communicating with each other.

2) The SMACK stack (On DC/OS) consists of Spark, Mesos, Akka, Cassandra, and Kafka. The features of the stack can be summarized as:

• Concise toolbox that can deal with a wide variety of data processing scenarios

• Composed of battle-tested and widely used software components with large open-source communities behind them

• Easy scalability and replication of data while preserving low latencies

• Single cluster managed platform that can handle heterogeneous loads and any kind of applications

3) Demo

• Quickly provision and operationalize a scalable and highly available big data and analytics pipeline (Kafka, Cassandra, Elastic, Spark)

• Architected to start small for initial deployments but easily scale (without re-architecting) to support very large production workloads

Deploy micro-service based containerized applications that leverage the data services. Multiple dev teams can access the data for their specific use cases. Deploy streaming analytics jobs that process the data in realtime

• All of the above sharing the same cluster nodes while maintaining performance and security isolation, increasing resource utilization and minimizing infrastructure costs

About Ravi Gupta:

:Ravi Gupta is a Sales Engineer at Mesosphere, he has spent time as a software engineer, a software consultant, a adjunct professor, and technical sales. He lives in Austin Texas and is passionate about all things technical.
