Event description

Description

Come out to the farm on Saturday, July 1st, for an evening of food, drink, and spirited discussion. Guests will be treated to an authentic eighteenth century style banquet meal prepared by Charlotte chef Craig Barbour. In addition, the night's speaker will be Stewart Harris, one of the nation's most recognized scholars of constitutional law.

Menu:

The menu is set to be a representation of what the founders may have enjoyed while discussing the constitution at the 1787 Convention. Our speaker will be talking specifically about the 1787 Constitutional Convention that spawned the United States Constitution.

Bubble and Squeak

Seasonal veggies, bound by mashed potatoes with some bacon mixed in and then shallow fried like a little croquet. Topped with fresh curdled cream (creme fraiche).

Peanut Soup

Colonial style, and we add a bees balm and red peppered goat cheese

Stuffed Quail

Stuffed with sausage, aromatics, and oats. Finished with an ale gravy.

Speaker and Chef Bios:

Stewart Harris is an award-winning law professor who loves to talk about the Constitution in a fun, accessible way that everyone can understand.

Harris is also the host of Your Weekly Constitutional, a public radio show and podcast that focuses upon interesting and controversial issues in constitutional law, from gay rights to gun rights. Produced in partnership with James Madison's Montpelier, it features interviews with knowledgeable lawyers, scholars, and others about current and historical topics, including church-state relations, states' rights, and even the constitutionality of secession. Harris has spoken with many fascinating people, including United States Senator Rand Paul, a leading critic of the Federal Reserve, former Governor Beverly Perdue of North Carolina, who led her state's efforts to compensate victims of forced sterilization, and John Bellinger, the former Legal Advisor to the National Security Council.

Craig Barbour started Roots in 2011 as a small local food centric food truck.

While attending University of Maryland, as a mechanical engineering major, he fell in love with cooking on accident. One night working as a server, the chef came rushing out of the kitchen in a panic because one of his cooks walked out just before a busy dinner service. He asked the group of servers if anyone had any kitchen experience. Having helped out with church functions and in his parent’s home kitchen, he raised his hand and thus fell head first into his first cooking job.

From there he transferred to Johnson and Wales University, graduating in 2008, and went on to become a Sous Chef and Food & Beverage Manager at Carmel Country Club. He worked under Chef Bruce Moffet at Barrington’s Restaurant before going on to open his own venture. He has now been the Executive Chef and Owner of Roots for 5 years.
