TRAVEL ON A BEAM OF SOUND TO THE HEART OF THE UNIVERSE
Constance Demby performs her Sonic Steel Space Bass inside the historic 100-inch telescope, as part of Knowledges at Mount Wilson Observatory, a weekend long art and performance festival. As the instrument is played, the acoustics of the telescope dome will create an immersive vibratory experience for the audience as they ponder the cosmos. This is a rare opportunity parinrg artist, instrument, and site in an unprecedented presentation.
In live concert, Constance Demby presents a range of sonic environments, accompanied by her penetrating voice: the Cosmic-Electronic-Symphonic Orchestra performed on digital sampling synthesizers, the Hammer Dulcimer with over 100 vibrating strings, and the Sonic Steel Space Bass, a ten foot sheet of steel that produces deep, primoridal, resonant sounds. An original design by Demby, the Sonic Steel Instruments have been recorded by Lucas Skywalker Studios for use in their filmscores, and also filmed by Discovery Channel at Gaudi's Parc Guell for "The Power of Music."
The Sonic Steel Space Bass is a 10 ft sheet of mirror finish stainless steel with 5 octaves of steel and brass rods. The rods can be bowed, struck percussively, and the metal sheet can be rubbed to create various effects. Several tones can be created by bowing a single rod, resulting in a multi-tiered overtone series. A sound scientist determined that the sound waves on the lowest notes of the instrument are approximately thirty feet long.
The instrument emits deep, primordial, archetypal resonances that put audiences into altered states in which listeners report transdimensional experiences. In healing modality, the ultra low sub-sonic frequencies have been known to break up and dissolve long held encrustrations held in the embodiment, resulting in healings.

Please note: No Handicapped Access: The 100-inch Telescope is nearly 100 years old and is not ADA-compliant. Visiting the inside of the Dome is not recommended for those with respiratory or heart problems due to the stairs and the 5700-ft elevation.
