Event description
Need to explain your expertise to the world? Join Ben Young Landis for a lively, interactive primer on the craft of conversational scicomm.

About this Event

As scientists and technical experts, we sometimes get stuck explaining the finer details of our research or profession — which is not the best way to open a casual conversation or to brief important decisionmakers and stakeholders. So, how can we best frame our message and explain the relevance of our good work?

My "Connecting with Your Audience" workshop (#CWYAscicomm) is designed for students and professionals in government, academia, and industry who need a scicomm primer or refresher. Instead of catch-all public speaking approaches, I focus on the art of connecting one-on-one with your audience. By navigating our audience's culture and context, we can find ways to communicate the big-picture implications of our work in a relaxed, relatable manner.

Using our Connecting with Your Audience Worksheet and mock interview practice, we'll learn how to refine your deep knowledge into clear, concise messages and briefings tailored for specific audiences — from journalists to policymakers to industry investors.

When you successfully connect with your audience, you can help inform their decisions, inspire their curiosity, and broaden their understanding of the natural world around them. Begin exploring your scicomm practice today — and help amplify the reach of your expertise tomorrow!

  • Rehearsing for the UC Davis Grad Slam or an upcoming science café? Getting ready to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting in Seattle? Needing a boost for grants and interviews season? Attend this workshop to get the extra coaching and practice you need.
  • Seating is limited — our workshops focus on a small-group learning environment. Reserve your spot early!
  • This workshop has been offered at conferences such as the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting, SETAC North America Annual Meeting, and the NorCal SETAC Annual Meeting, and taught to programs such as the Delta Science Fellows, CCST Science & Technology Policy Fellows, UC Davis FUTURE, and UC Santa Cruz Coastal Science & Policy Program. Past participants include research faculty, graduate students, postdocs, federal and state agency staff, development officers, PIOs, and industry professionals.

In Their Words

"This was an insightful workshop and a great way to practice some light science improv in a relaxed setting. Great for anyone looking to gain confidence or get practice explaining something complex!" — Victoria Strait, PhD Candidate in Physics, UC Davis
"This course has helped me to distill my research 'story' to communicate the importance of my work to any audience. Every scientist needs more training like this!" — Krista Hoffman PhD, Past President of NorCal SETAC
"Great workshop! Highly recommend this to both new and experienced scientists." — Richard Connon PhD, Associate Professor of Anatomy, Physiology & Cell Biology, UC Davis
