Talk 1: A context-aware brain-computer interface communication system - Maryam Fallah

We all need a form of communication for expressing our needs and emotions. This can be through body gestures, hand movements, speech or facial expressions. However, many individuals living with a severe disability often are not capable of communicating through these channels. A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a technology which makes communication feasible through neural activity, eliminating the need for body movement. In this talk, Maryam will present her master’s thesis findings on designing and implementing a context-aware BCI that leverages machine learning and natural language processing to facilitate the communication needs of individuals with language impairments.

Bio: Maryam earned her master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto with a focus on artificial intelligence and Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). During her master’s she designed and implemented a context-aware virtual speller that can be controlled via the brain to help individuals with communication difficulties. Maryam is passionate about applying machine learning to real-world problems and contributing to making a difference.

Talk 2 - Artificial Intelligence – Trends across Industries

Sarah Sun

Having worked in multiple industries, it’s interesting to note that there are several thoughts, trends, and ideas that don’t change from one to the other. During this talk, Sarah Sun will share personal anecdotes from her experience that range from the absurd to the merely dubious as she has crossed from banking to mining and back again!

Bio: Sarah Sun has almost a decade of experience from the financial industry with a specialty in data value creation. Educated at the University of Waterloo with a double major in Mathematical Finance and Statistics, she has a broad array of experience covering business analytics, predictive modelling, data science, recruiting, innovation, ventures, data governance, monetization, and strategy. As Chief Data Strategist for GoldSpot Discoveries, she is focused on driving long-term growth and revenue through a new approach to resource investing - the combination of fundamental investing and AI-quantitative investing for the resource market. In her other hobbies, Sarah is also a coach for Math Team Canada at the International Math Olympiad.

Talk 3: Loss Prediction in Crop Insurance - Tzvi Aviv

DaganTech develops geospatial intelligence platforms for maintaining farm productivity, profitability, and sustainability in warming climates. DaganTech helps farmers and crop insurance companies mitigate the risks posed by climate change by applying deep learning and machine learning to satellite images and historical farm data to analyze crop yields and predict food production risks in areas ranging from entire states to single fields. We are currently piloting crop-yield prediction services for crop insurance and reinsurance companies in North America.

Bio: Tzvi Aviv won several awards for his open-innovation work with life-science companies, including awards from agricultural and pharmaceutical companies. He gained his data analytics and project management skills at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto. An MBA from Ryerson University with a focus on the Management of Innovation and Technology complements his skills with business intelligence, business strategy, and presentation experience.
