Description

Privacy and Transparency at Work

An interactive session on LGBTI data collection

Collecting data on the sexual orientation and gender identity of your employees provides valuable insight into potential workplace inequality and helps in monitoring diversity policy effectiveness. However, it may also cause tension with people’s right to privacy and their ability to control their personal information.

  • How do you work with sensitive employee data in your efforts to create an inclusive workplace?

  • Can you ask your employees to identify their sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics?

  • What could be unintended consequences of collecting and processing sensitive employee data?

These questions and more will be discussed during an interactive session, hosted by Reed Elsevier and organized in collaboration with Prof.dr. Jojanneke van der Toorn, Workplace Pride Chair* (Social Psychology; Leiden University), Dr. Stefan Kulk (Privacy Law; Utrecht University), and Dr. Martine Veldhuizen (Cultural History; Utrecht University). Together, we will share experiences and identify the pitfalls and promises of employee data collection. Your input will serve as the basis for a research project that aims to develop a practical evidence-based toolbox aiding employers in developing effective diversity policy that respects people’s right to privacy.
