Saturdays are fun with STEM! Join us for special learning activities on Connect2STEM TV live. The kick off begins on Saturday, January 30, at 10:00 a.m. with a new episode premiering every Saturday in February. Episodes that have aired will remain available for on-demand viewing.

By registering for Connect2STEM LIVE TV, you will be the first to receive notifications about those special event experiences in February!

Kickoff Event Highlights:

  • Join the world's most advanced pediatric patient, 'Hal,' to help train future doctors.
  • Take a special visit to the popular Wildcat Play Hospital with the College of Nursing.
  • TikTok your way to a STEM career with Cox Communications.
  • Learn how to make exploding toothpaste with the UArizona College of Pharmacy.

  • Scrub in with Regents' Professor Allan Hamilton, MD, FACS, a world-renowned neurosurgeon and executive director of the Arizona Simulation Technology Education Center.

Saturday, February 6

10:00 to 10:45 a.m. – Explore the World of STEAM From A-ZSTEM

  • Category: All.
  • Grades: K-8, parents and teachers.
  • STEMologist host(s): Jenny Frank, education outreach coordinator and Katrece Swenson, education outreach associate, Maricopa County Air Quality Department.

Experience the excitement of an in-person STEAM event, virtually! The adventure begins with a brief introduction and then continues with a virtual exhibit featuring interactive objects and videos. Students will explore the amazing STEAM booths provided by 15 partnering organizations, including: the Maricopa County Air Quality Department, Grand Canyon University, Phoenix Zoo, Arizona Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and many more. We will wrap up the session with a live Q and A session featuring experts from participating organizations and an interactive online discussion board. Watch our promotional video for a preview of this virtual STEAM exploration. 

11:00 to 11:30 a.m. – Lungs with University of Arizona College of Pharmacy

1:00 to 1:30 p.m. – Art in Geometry

  • Category: Math.
  • Grades: 4-12.
  • STEMologist host(s): Bill Pike, statewide coordinator, University of Arizona, Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA).

Discover how using just a few geometric shapes you can create a piece of art ... in Math!

  • Materials needed: Five pieces of paper, a pencil, a ruler, scissors and markers or crayons.

Saturday, February 13

10:00 to 10:30 a.m. – Listening Lesson: Using a Stethoscope to Hear Your Heart Beat

  • Category: Medicine.
  • STEMologist host(s): University of Arizona College of Pharmacy.

11:00 to 11:30 a.m. – Makerspace Magic and Drones to the Rescue

  • Categories: Technology and engineering.
  • Grades: K-2.
  • STEMologist host(s): "Dr. J." director, STEAM and Makerspace programs, along with members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale.

Take a virtual tour of the exciting and new Ellie and Michael Ziegler STEAM Makerspace Studio, followed by a live discussion with the Boys & Girls Clubs STEAM Dream Team. Discover how drones deliver basic first aid — such as band-aids — at a safe distance. We will finish with learning how to make a wind-up helicopter.  

  • Materials needed: Four small paper clips, masking tape, one craft stick, one long rubber band, one various colors of construction paper propeller, pencils, scissors, one heavy cardstock, retractable pens — several in various sizes, string .

Saturday, February 20

10:00 to 11:00 a.m. – Saturday Scrubs

  • Category: Medicine.
  • Grades: 9-12.

We will introduce participants to a variety of topics related to medicine and the human body.

Time TBD – Real World/Real Fun with Math and Engineering

  • Categories: Engineering and Math.
  • Grades: 9-12.
  • STEMologist host: Mark Clytus.

Saturday, February 27

9:00 to 9:30 a.m. – Sticky Ice Experiment

  • Category: Science.
  • Grades: K-4.
  • STEMologist host: Anika Islam, ASU Honors student.

Join us for this quick — and sticky — challenge. Can you lift an ice cube using only a string and salt? With serious wow factor, this science experiment is a simple, fun way to learn about salt's effect on the freezing point of water.

  • Materials needed:  Three small bowls — for ice, salt and water — and a piece of string. 

9:00 to 9:30 a.m. – *Tour Chloe the Giant Colon

  • Category: Medicine.
  • Grades: All ages, parents and teachers, too.
  • STEMologist host: Octavio Castaños, senior health educator and Gabriela Ruiz, health educator, the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Here’s your chance to see what a colon looks like!  Take part in this unique experience with an in-depth guided tour of Chole, the 8-foot inflatable colon. Learn how to take good care of your colon, what polyps are, as well as the warning signs, diagnosis and treatment of colon cancer.

*Special note: This session will be presented in English and Spanish.
