About this event
We invite the South Florida community to share in the amplification of diverse stories as we discuss the Historic El Grito de Yara and the sustained push for Cuban Identity and Independence.
This community discussion will highlight the significant, indelible roles held by individuals of African descent throughout Cuba’s trajectory from Spain’s ultimate American colony to a sovereign nation expressly built on Cubanidad--an ideology that still serves to erase the proven leadership, ingenuity, bravery, resilience, and mere existence of Cuba’s Afrodescendientes. We will examine the use of Hip Hop as an effective means to expose the existence and impact of anti-black racism in Cuba.
We will close with current efforts to end Anti-Black racism in Cuba and ways to amplify, fortify, and support such efforts.
