Confidence Building Workshop (FOR KIDS!)

About this event

This workshop is about developing more confidence through learning to communicate thoughts and ideas into visual concepts.

This is more than just learning about the basic rules of photography. Yes, there are some obvious things that will need to be discussed like holding your camera straight etc. but this workshop goes so beyond basic techniques of “learning photography”.

This is an opportunity for children to explore their creativity and learn to understand and communicate how they see things. It is a “confidence-building” workshop.

It’s a workshop for kids to practice articulating their ideas and thoughts through directing me or my assistant how to sit/stand/smile etc. Unlike my adult workshops, this is NOT a workshop where I will be critiquing their results but more so encouraging their vision and encouraging them to try new perspectives.

How long is it and when will it be?

There will be groups of 5 kids max per group. I really want to give each child adequate amount of attention and guidance. It will a one-day event of 4 hours with a lunch break for the kids (Kids are to pack their own lunch). If the class hits the max I open another date for another group.

What will be covered in the workshop?

1. Basic camera technique- holding the camera straight, different perspectives- all the ways to hold a camera (vertical, horizontal, full length, 3quarter, close up, and rule of thirds). This is very basic information for the children to just consider and think about before they shoot. There are no rights or wrongs in this workshop.

2. I will demonstrate some ways to speak to the subject and how to pose them and then the kids will direct me or my assistant on how to sit, stand, smile for a shoot and try different angles as mentioned above.

3. The kids will set up a picture with props or a person and before they photograph it, they need to explain to the group what technique they will try (there will a list of options presented to them that they can pick from ie close up or full body).

4. We will discuss colours and how they make their children feel. This allows creative thoughts to blossom and opens the children's minds to how colours have an impact on the image.

5. I will show the kids photographs I have done and they can practice articulating what they see and things they notice. This will be after everything above so the kids have more of an understanding of things they can discuss while analyzing my images.

6. I will have the kids pick their favourite shots they have done and talk about them in front of the group. This is a exercise in public speaking and self-critique.

The kids are welcome to bring any digital camera they have (point and shoot, iphone, dslr, etc). This workshop is meant to build confidence in communicating ideas and practical knowledge. The camera equipment is NOT the focus of this workshop.

You will receive a free 90minute photoshoot with McCormick Photography AND a $100 print credit you can towards prints or a package. This is a great opportunity for the kids (and family) to meet me and get comfortable with me before the workshop this summer! I will also spend an extra 15minutes with the child taking the workshop to show them a couple of things so they have a confidence boost even before they come into the workshop.
