Event description

Description

Celebration of Teaching (CoT) is an annual conference hosted in March by the students in the M.A. in TESOL program (Pre-K to 12 initial certification track) at Teachers College, Columbia University. The theme of this year’s conference is “Trauma-Informed Teaching.” We aim to provide teachers from across local communities with tools for working with language learners who may have experienced trauma and its effects, including SLIFE, refugees, undocumented students, incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students, and vulnerable students. According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, more than 25 percent of American youth experience trauma or repeated trauma by age 16. This means that teachers interact with students affected by trauma each day. Language learners and immigrant students in particular are likely to have experienced and to continue to experience trauma, fear, violence, or chronic stress. In light of this, CoT 2020 will feature a keynote presentation by bilingual licensed clinical social worker Stephenie Cedeño and psychologist specializing in Childhood Loss and Trauma Dr. Denise Sandole, as well as hands-on lesson demos to equip teachers and educational communities, including psychologists, school counselors, and educational advocates, with strategies for working with language learners who have experienced trauma.
