About the Speakers

Lisette Nieves

Lisette Nieves is currently the Director of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and a Full Clinical Professor at NYU Steinhardt where she teaches education policy and leads the effort to design a new doctoral program in Educational Leadership and Innovation. Lisette holds a B.A. from Brooklyn College, a B.A./M.A. from the University of Oxford, an M.P.A. from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University and a doctorate with distinction in Higher Education Management at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a Truman Scholar, Rhodes Scholar and an Aspen Pahara Fellow.

For over 25 years, Lisette has served in a variety of cross sector leadership positions. She is an experienced social entrepreneur, public sector leader and scholar. Lisette founded Lingo Ventures which is focused on growth, talent recruitment/retention, and change management. Lisette served as the Belle Zeller Distinguished Visiting Professor in Public Policy at the City University of New York at Brooklyn College. Lisette has also held senior leadership positions in municipal and federal government. She most recently served as an Obama appointee on the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, where she co-chaired the higher education subcommittee and supported the production of two reports and convenings.

Lisette also served as the founding Executive Director of Year Up NY, an innovative workforce development program, where in the span of five years she grew the organization from a $250,000 seed grant to a $6 million operation with over 20 corporate partnerships. Her interest in workforce and education led to her dissertation on the relationship between student work and school roles, for which she received the 2016 Dissertation of the Year Award by the (NCSD – AACC). Her board affiliations include serving as the Board Chair at Guttman Community College Foundation and the Fund for the City of New York. She also sits on the board of Stand for Children, Edwin Gould Foundation. Ed Trust and the NewSchools Venture Fund. Her areas of interest include community colleges, college pathways, workforce and education partnerships.

Yvonne Garcia

Yvonne Garcia serves as Chief of Staff to State Street’s CEO, Ron O’Hanley. Prior to State Street, Yvonne served as Director in Marketing and Distribution Strategy for Liberty Mutual and as Vice President for Bank of America’s China Construction Bank Strategic Assistance Program. In that role, Yvonne and her team created and implemented over five new Wealth Management Centers throughout China which resulted in over 80 centers currently throughout the country. Yvonne is a fully certified Six Sigma Black Belt, and applies that discipline, rigor, and process to every project on which she deploys.

As an active leader of local and national communities, Yvonne served as the Chairwoman for the largest Latino Professional Organization in the country, ALPFA. In addition, Yvonne was appointed by Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker to serve on the state’s Latino Advisory Commission Board and most recently was appointed as the Chairwoman for the Greater Boston Chamber’s Women’s Network. Yvonne has been featured in Fortune magazine as one of the Top 50 Most Powerful Latinas in the United States three years in a row and was named Boston Business Journal’s Power 50 just last year. In addition, Yvonne has run 9 marathons in the past 7 years in support of various charities across the Commonwealth.

Yvonne holds an MBA from Boston University in Finance and Marketing and a BA from SUNY Albany. She is also a graduate of the ARMY R.O.T.C. program at Siena College in Loudonville, NY and holds a Certificate in Economics and Culture from La Sorbonne in Paris, France. Just last year, Yvonne was awarded an honorary degree in Doctor of Humane Letters from Cambridge College in Boston, Massachusetts and an honorary degree in Doctor of Commerce from New England School of Business in 2019.
