Event description

Description

Bronxville, NY – Concordia College is delighted to welcome distinguished scholar and author Dr. Heath W. Carter to the November 1st installment of its Jacobson Global Lecture Series.

In keeping with the college’s year of themed events celebrating the 500th anniversary of The Reformation, Dr. Carter’s lecture is entitled Semper Reformanda: Church and Spirit in an Unjust World. The topic is particularly timely as issues of social justice here and around the world command attention on a daily basis.

According to Dr. Carter, the Reformation notion that the church must always be reformed (ecclesia semper reformanda est) remains as relevant as ever. While Christian communities can easily become conformed to the modern world and its deep-seated inequalities, the Spirit would have it differently. In this talk Dr. Carter will look at examples of how everyday believers in places as far-flung as Nairobi and New York City have been awakened to God's thirst for righteousness in the here and now, and how they have in turn transformed both church and society. Dr. Carter will moreover reflect on the implications of their prophetic witness for those who seek to be faithful today.

Dr. Carter is an associate professor of history at Valparaiso University, and a noted expert on the intersection of religion and public life in the modern United States. He is the author of Union Made: Working People and the Rise of Social Christianity in Chicago (Oxford University Press, 2015) and the co-editor of The Pew and the Picket Line: Christianity and the American Working Class (University of Illinois Press, 2016), Turning Points in the History of American Evangelicalism (Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2017), and A Documentary History of Religion in America, Concise Ed. (Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2018). Carter is currently working on a new book entitled On Earth as it is in Heaven: Social Christians and the Fight to End American Inequality.

For nearly three decades the Jacobson Global Lecture Series (renamed in 2004) has brought to Concordia’s campus distinguished speakers from diverse international fields, enlightening students, faculty and the community at large.
