ABOUT THE GROUP

The group "Les violons tziganes de Cannes" is a non-profit created in 1989 under the impetus of M. Jean-Jacques Calvi, a teacher at the local conservatory, and with the sponsorship of the Provence Symphonic Orchestra’s chief conductor. Since the creation, the group has traveled around the world to promote Eastern European gypsy music (known in French as musique tzigane), including Budapest, Hungary; Rajasthan (the birthplace of this music) and New Delhi, India; Quebec and Ontario, Canada. For the first time ever, the group is coming to the United States for a series of concerts in the DMV area.

ABOUT THE GROUP LEADER

Jean Jacques Calvi, a father and a grandfather, continues to lead the group and contributes by playing the guitar, singing and setting the tempo. Jean Jacques grew-up on the French Riviera and received an extensive musical education in guitar, trumpet, and cornet. He worked as a trumpet player in the Provence Symphony Orchestra and in parallel taught at the Conservatory of Music of Cannes. In the late 80’s, he joined the S.A.C.E.M. as a composer and a music arranger. Ensemble ‘Les Violons tziganes de Cannes’ is a result of his passion for gypsy music and a strong dedication to share it with others.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

The ensemble is composed of about 15 musicians who play such musical instruments as violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, guitar, guitar, flute, and voice. Aged 13 and above, most of them received their musical education from the Conservatory of Music of Cannes and hold top-level prizes. They participated in masterclasses with re-known artists and contributed to the success of the Sympho project, a symphonic orchestra composed only of amateur highly skilled musicians and sponsored by the Provence Symphony orchestra. While some of them still study in a high school and college, others pursue simultaneously a professional career in different fields.
