Event Details

Beyond the well-executed, meticulously composed and captured photograph is where concept lives. Done well, conceptual photography can engage the audience more fully, enrapturing them in the message you are bringing to their attention that could evoke a personal experience and connection within them.

This workshop is designed for photography students who are beyond the technical and compositional skills they have mastered and now want to take their photography to the next level. In this case, “concept!”

This workshop will introduce the hungry student to the “idea” process by first tapping into their creative sensibilities, followed by brainstorming and cultivating ideas, and then nurturing it/them to reality. This tried and true procedure will unveil the critical thinker the student already is, and reveal the perpetuating process of “one good idea leads to another.” Once realized, the student then becomes an idea machine, able to carry on his craft and talent for poetic storytelling into future projects and commissions.

This workshop is designed to expose the student to the varied outlets conceptual photography infuses, such as fine art, editorial illustration, conceptual portrait, and advertising. Only in this way can the student come away knowing what genre he/she would like to focus on, and can only truly be divulged through experiencing it all.

We will begin the day with lecture and discussion. Students will then have the opportunity to shoot their concept in a studio environment, with all other students and instructor as their aids. The workshop will end with a critique in which each student will present their works of art to the class in an open forum that all will participate in critiquing. Everyone will be tasked to help in the spirit of support and encouragement. The student will benefit from the suggestions and help as we talk about that student’s processes from sketch to final execution.

Workshop Objective: Develop an instinctual understanding and practice of visual communication through concept and idea formulation and execution. The student will gain experience to achieve their visual goals through the common processes and practices of researching, sketching, propping and wardrobe, make-up, as well as in-camera and post-production techniques.

Equipment Needed: DSLR camera, memory card, USB card reader. Must have manual controls, ability to interchange lenses, and at least capture a 10 megabite file. Control of shutter, aperture, ISO, white balance is required. A USB Drive (16-32gb), or external HD to submit and store your files, or tethered to your laptop. Tripods are recommended.

NOTE: Please bring your portfolio or web link to the first class meeting.

Instructor Bio:
Hugh Kretschmer is a Los Angeles native who grew up in a family of artists, discovering photography at 13 under the guidance of his father, who was a photo-instrumentation engineer for McDonnell Douglas during the Mercury through Apollo missions. Recognized repeatedly throughout his 22 year career for his work’s enduring (and endearing) use of metaphor and hand crafted, trick-the-eye elements. Kretschmer has achieved singular success as an editorial and advertising photographer, who creates imagery that applies to both art and commerce. He is represented by Renee Rhyner & Co. in North America, and Trayler and Trayler in Europe for his commercial work, and by Fathom Gallery in Los Angeles for fine art.
Hugh tells us that his photographs have been described as fanciful, curious, imaginative, unusual, and a little creepy. They are influenced by myriad dreams and desires of what life could be, if only… They are commentaries on the human condition, influenced by a perspective that honors and embraces the assets, and deficits, we all share as human beings, seasoned with a bit of quirk and irony.”
