This conference will provide templates and tools for effective lesson planning and development where language and content are purposefully anchored together in 7-12 World Language and ENL classes

  • explore the power of Concept Mapping in order to develop comprehensive units of instruction
  • learn to implement the Discussion Clouds protocol and creat your own exemplar
  • provide examples of curriculum and assessment at the FLES levels
  • share Integrated Performance Assessments (IPAs) for FLES classes

Keynote Speakers

David Rose

David Rose is director of World Languages and ENL K-12 for the Oceanside School District, where he has served for the past 14 years. Dr. Rose holds a doctorate in language instruction from Stony Brook University with a specialization in Italian and linguistics. He has taught Italian at the middle school, high school, and college level. In addition, he has taught graduate courses in the TESOL certification program for Queens College. In 2016, Dr. Rose was recognized by the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Center for his commitment to the Hispanic community and his respect for the importance of cultural diversity in schools and communities.

Elaine Margarita

Elaine Margarita served as the Supervisor of World Languages K-12 at Syosset and Jericho Schools for 20 years. She teaches methods courses at Queens College and the FLES Certification course at Queens College and Stony Brook University. She is a consultant to school districts throughout New York State for implementing FLES programs. She also provides professional development on curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessment for K-12 world language programs. She is a past President of LILT (Long Island Language Teachers), a former Director to the Board of NYSAFLT (New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers) and a Past President of FLACS (Foreign Language Association of Chairpersons and Supervisors).
