Event Details

Con Edison Family Science Nights

...because Science Rocks!

Con Edison Family Science Nights will encourage children and parents to engage in science thinking and activities together.   Families will investigate, experiment and explore in and around the Greenbelt Nature Center.

A few short, self-guided activities will start families on thinking together, followed by a full group activity lead by Greenbelt educators. Children 8-10 years old and their caregivers are welcome to register for these events.

On this night, families will be inspired by Geology, the science that deals with the earth's physical structure and substance, its history, and the processes that act on it.

We will earn about the different rock layers that make up the earth, and how to classify them. . Most of the rocks exposed at the surface of Earth are sedimentary--formed from particles of older rocks that have been broken apar   We will conduct experiments to discover which rocks are attracted to a magnet, which color streak they make, and how they may react to vinegar. Then we will come together and compare rocks and minerals head-to-head using the Mohs hardness scale.
