Join Certified Professional Midwife, Augustine Colebrook in the beautiful lakes region of northern minnesota for a 6 day intensive immersion in the art and science and practice of traditional out-of-hospital midwifery. This unique workshop is hosted by Mewinzha Ondaadiziike Wiigaming, a Native American Indian, non-profit organization committed to community centered holistic care for all pregnant and birthing mothers, and their families.

With sections on charting, risk assessment, and equipment know-how, this comprehensive clinical care workshop is specificly aimed to support community-based birth care providers in low-resource settings and/or serving clients that decline high-tech care. Including hands-on skills throughout, this is going to be an amazing workshop to expand your skill-set AND decrease your personal liability. Comprehensive Midwifery Curriculum

Each one of the topics could be a workshop on its own, but you get to attend every one of them in this amazing week-long workshop! Come prepared to take in a tremendous amount of information everyday!

Ample lunch breaks are scheduled to optimize information retention. Certificate of completion awarded at the conclusion, as well as any relevant skills sign off for NARM or MCU, BirthWIse, Bastyr, NCM, Birthingway, Nizshoni, and NMI. CEU's offered for starred information below - totaling 24 hours through MEAC & ACNM.

Day 1 –

  • Maternal blood work & urinalysis - understanding basic lab values and their meaning
  • Prenatal bleeding - differential diagnosis and treatment/action during each trimester
  • Leopold's maneuvers - discovering fetal lie, presentation, position, attitude, flexion and station by palpation
  • What's happening in there? - pelvic and soft tissue anatomy and how the baby travels though optimally
  • Optimal Fetal Positioning - how to avoid and fix dysfunctional labor, including Rebozzo techiniques & Maya Massage
  • Tongue and lip tie identification - how to prevent needless suffering
  • Anatomy of a birth bag - what midwives bring to birth and why
  • Midwifing yourself through boundary setting

Day 2 –

  • Charting do's and don'ts - basics as well as defensive charting to stay out of the court room
  • Risk assessment - understanding perception of safety, choice and autonomy while protecting yourself
  • Placenta magic - learn to perform a thorough placenta exam, drawing cord blood and discuss placenta medicine
  • Newborn screening - techniques to eliminate the second poke and reduce crying
  • O2 set up - reasons for clinical use on mothers and infants
  • IV set up - perfecting your skill at assisting (this does not include actual phlebotomy)
  • IM injections - basic needle skills and medication safety

Day 3 -*

  • Advanced fetal monitoring, out-of-hospital NST and fluid assessment
  • Shoulder dystocia prevention and management with hands on mannequin practice and role play
  • Internal fetal head positioning and re-positioning & cervical lip diagnosis & treatment
  • Non-pharmaceutical cervical ripening & labor induction including herbs, oils, homeopathics, natural prostaglandins & oxytocin release, and bulb foley placement

Day 4 -*

  • Hemorrhage diagnosis & treatment
  • Estimating blood loss
  • Preventing tears
  • Performing episiotomy
  • Suturing – Including a 4 hour hands-on session on Repairing lacerations including labial, clitoral hood & 3rd degree extension

Day 5 -*

  • Screening for twins and breech in your practice
  • The skill of palpation - don't miss the breech
  • Review of mother-led turning techniques
  • Diagnosed 'high risk', now what?, Informed decision-making with your clients
  • Managing a twin pregnancy from diagnosis to delivery
  • Timing for twin births; knowing when to act
  • Assessing baby for position, station, and well-being
  • Gentle External Breech Version (ECV) in pregnancy
  • Cardinal movements for the normal breech delivery
  • Breech extraction techniques for the abnormal breech delivery
  • Evaluation of risk factors for breech and multiples
  • Considerations for the immediate postpartum

Day 6 -

  • Normal newborn extra-uterine transition and pathophysiology of poor newborn transition
  • Placenta's function and form in third stage and the importance of cord blood
  • Vernix's magic for eliminating weight loss
  • Neonatal cardio-pulmonary transition and integrated resuscitation
  • The newborn exam: why, when and how?
  • Gestation age assessment slide show
  • Gross-anomaly emergency action guide
  • Newborn procedures informed decision-making for parents
  • As well as in-depth screening guidelines:
    • pulse oximetry
    • neonatal glucose
    • neonatal metabolic
    • ABO incompatibility
    • bilirubin/ jaundice
    • tongue tie/ lip tie
