Event description
This workshop will offer foundational skills to begin composting at home and how to initiate simple, community-engaged composting projects.

About this Event

This workshop will offer foundation skills to begin composting at home and to be able to initiate small, simple, community-engaged composting projects. Composting as a community, whether in your place of work, local schools, or in neighborhood groups, can maximize the use of physical space, increase the efficiency of a compost bin's decomposition processes, reduce landfill contributions, and increase the availability of local, healthy, soil-building compost for our landscapes and gardens. Community composting creates unique connections between people and to natural cycles and helps make a local impact on global challenges that you will learn more about in this class. We'll share best practices for backyard composting and community composting and tool you up with resources to further your learning beyond this class. Everyone goes home with an adhesive label and kitchen sign to help you learn about the most optimal materials to put in the compost bin.

Cost: FREE, Suggested donation $5

Pre-Registration: Requested. If you pre-register and attend, you will be entered to win an Earth Machine compost bin to help you get your project started.

Sunshine Community Compost is a local non-profit organization that is focused on creating compost and recovering resources in ways that grow community. Our mission is to strengthen community connections and give back to the planet through accessible education and action programs that increase local composting, resource recovery and zero waste efforts. Since our first pilot project in late 2016, we have diverted 30,000 pounds of food scraps from local landfills, educated hundreds of residents and youth about the benefits of composting and hosted Florida’s first ever “Compost-A-Thon” during International Compost Awareness Week. Please visit www.sunshinecommunitycompost.org for more info.

Eat Local Week! This workshop is one of 20+ events during the 2019 Eat Local Week. Check out www.TransitionSRQ.org for a full list of events!
