Complementary Therapies for Pain Management Online Continuous Course. The primary author, Gwen Wyatt, PhD, RN, FAAN, provided content for this course. Dr. Wyatt is a tenured professor in the College of Nursing at Michigan State University College of Nursing. She is certified in advance care planning, end of life nursing education, and therapeutic touch practitioner. Dr Wyatt’s program of funded research focuses on pain and symptom management using complementary therapies, most notably with breast, lung, and prostate cancer patients. Her work on these topics has spanned decades, positively impacting hundreds of patients and educating nursing students in all programs of study during this time.

This online offering has the goal of improving nurses’ knowledge of complementary therapies integrated with conventional methods of pain management.

The learner outcome of this offering is:

RNs will have enhanced knowledge of complementary therapies in pain management and know how to integrate these methods with conventional methods of pain management in practice, achieving at least 80% accuracy on the post-test quiz.

At the conclusion of the online offering, the learner will be able to:

  1. Define pain and discuss basic pain assessment and management modalities
  2. Describe the use of complementary therapies in the USA
  3. Define the terms used to refer to Complementary therapies in health care
  4. List the five categories of CAM therapies and identify one therapy for each category.
  5. Evaluate the evidence base for pain management with Complementary therapies
  6. Identify pain referral issues for patients, nurses, and other providers related to Complementary Therapies
  7. Discuss barriers to the effective integration of Complementary therapies into conventional health care
  8. Identify methods to identify area resources and referrals for Complementary therapies for pain management
  9. Apply this content to daily work.

This program complies with the requirement for continuing nursing education (CNE) and provides 1.14 contact hours of pain and pain symptom management. This partially fulfills the 2.0 contact hour requirement for RN relicensure within the state of Michigan. This educational offering will be available to learners for 3 years, until 2021. There is no conflict of interest for anyone with the ability to control content for this activity. Successful completion criteria for CNE includes an engagement with the required content, 80% or better pass rate on the course quiz, and a completed evaluation.
