Event description

Description

Why are so many students who seem perfectly capable of learning not succeeding in our classrooms?

Why do we discipline and suspend so many students?

Why are anxiety, mood, eating, self-harm and substance-abuse disorders so prevalent among students?

Why do we still have so many drop-outs?

Years ago, researchers set out to answer these questions and discovered evidence that trauma from exposure to adverse childhood experiences—such as abuse, neglect, homelessness, domestic violence, etc.—can have an enormous impact on the difficulties many children and young adults bring to school. In addition to impacting their ability to learn, these adverse childhood experiences were found to affect students’ abilities to form and maintain relationships and behave appropriately at school and in social settings.

This understanding is setting in motion a movement across the country for “trauma sensitive schools” so that educators can better ensure the success of students who live with overwhelming stress.

In this one day training, Karen will explain how new neuroscience reveals that learning to how to self-regulate our own chemistry as children can prevent, interrupt, mitigate and reverse the harm from childhood adversity, regardless of whether or not we can impact its source.

An exciting part of this research shows that just by adding simple daily coping and stress management practices into schools can effect significant positive changes in youth behavior, learning and development and become a compassionate school.
