PROGRAM CONTENT OVERVIEW

The purpose of this program is to provide participants strategies to create workspaces and environments that are welcoming and inclusive for members of the LGBTQ+ community. This program seeks to enhance participant’s knowledge about the lived experiences of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as engage participants in thoughtful dialogue and activities to challenge their own attitudes or biases toward communities of difference. To accomplish this, participants will engage in self-reflective and group based work that will allow participants to challenge these individual biases in order to better serve as a resource and support for LGBTQ+ clients and colleagues. Participants will come away from the program with a working knowledge that includes: terminology and history related to LGBTQ+ identities and health, information about who LGBTQ+ populations are, what health disparities LGBTQ+ populations face, and how to implement practices of care and support for these communities.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Formulate a deeper understanding of the LGBTQ+ community through language, culture and experience.
  • Discuss tips and recommend best practices for establishing a climate of care for LGBTQ+ clients.
  • Examine personal attitudes and approaches to supporting LGBTQ+ in the work setting.
  • Identify three strategies for creating a welcoming environment for all clients and colleagues.
