Comparative Wealth Gains from Buying vs. Renting in Major Metro Areas

Dr. Ken Johnson

Associate Dean, Graduate Programs, Florida Atlantic University

January 19, 2018, 12:00 noon–1:00 p.m. (Friday)

12th Floor Event Room

(Light lunch starting at 11:50 a.m.)

Homeownership remains an aspiration for many households for marital/lifestyle reasons, wealth creation, and as the fulfillment of the American dream. Studies have shown the many positive effects of homeownership on children, civic involvement, and crime reduction.

Homeownership is also viewed as a way to build up wealth and “not throw money on rent.” For households who are primarily interested at the financial aspects of homeownership, one can argue that using the money not invested in housing to purchase a financial asset may achieve the same financial returns. In this presentation, Dr. Ken Johnson will discuss the comparative wealth gains of owners versus renters in 23 metro areas using the ‘racehorse’ framework developed by Beracha-Hardin-and Johnson.

Dr. Ken Johnson is the Associate Dean, Graduate Programs, Florida Atlantic University (since August 2014). He is also a co-founder of The Real Estate Initiative at Florida Atlantic University, a research program focused on providing critical analysis of real estate trends and issues. Previously, he was with the Faculty of the Florida International University (2005-2014), Auburn University of Montgomery (2002-2005), and Florida Atlantic University (2001-2002). He was the Publications Director of the American Real Estate Society (ARES) in 2015-2016.

Dr. Johnson has a Ph.D. in finance/real estate at the University of Alabama and an MBA and BS in marketing from Auburn University. His full CV can be found here.
