Welcome, community volunteers! We invite you to register for this event:

Community Volunteer Training: Supporting Adult Literacy and Learning

Here is the Agenda for the Day:

8:30 AM Registration & Breakfast

9:00-10:00 AM Opening Speaker: Jorge L. Baron, Executive Director of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project. Learn the latest information available regarding U.S. immigration policy and how you can better serve the immigrant community. There will be a particular focus on possible upcoming changes in the immigration landscape and how to respond to the new environment.

10:00-10:15 AM Break

10:15-11:30 AM Workshop 1 (choose 1)

  • ESL Teaching Techniques
  • Understanding Adult Learners (offered at 10:15 and 11:45)
  • Working with Immigrants - A Social Service Perspective
  • Hands-On Learning: Creating tools and manipulatives for ESL (offered at 10:15 and 11:45)

11:30-11:45 AM Break

11:45AM-1:00PM Workshop 2 (choose 1)

  • ESL Lesson Planning
  • Understanding Adult Learners (REPEAT from Workshop 1)
  • Basic Reading for Adult Learners
  • Teaching Job Readiness Skills
  • Hands-On Learning: Creating tools and manipulatives for ESL (REPEAT from Workshop 1)
