About this event
This is a two-day online training:
Saturday and Sunday, January 16th & 17th, 10am -1pm ET both days.
Join the LABAN/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies as we embark on a process of transformative change. For this, part one of a four-part social justice training tailored to the specific needs of our community, LIMS invites you to participate in gaining a deeper understanding of racism and its impact on our community.
Space is limited to 50 people so please register early. We will be offering Level 2: Amplifying Interpersonal Engagement of this training in February and March of 2021.

Interrupting Racism Level 1: Amplifying Individual Awareness
This training lays the foundation for a common understanding of the breadth and depth of racism and its impact on all aspects of society. Experiencing the History of Racism Timeline in community increases awareness and commitment to racial equity.
Activities and exercises address:
- Community Agreements for engaging in learning together
- History of Race & Racism in the US Timeline
- Unpacking our personal histories of race and racism
- Data on the material impact of racism today
- Stereotypes, prejudice & bias in professional dance as well as society at large
- Social identity and perspective
- Intersectionality and the complexity of belonging
- Looking through the lens of diversity, equity & inclusion to identify racism in dance
- Language for talking about race, ethnicity and racism
- Engaging with cultural humility
