Event description

Description

As part of this years' Transgender Day of Remembrance, the LGBT Center and Margie's Hope present a free community screening of the Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson.

The film centers on the unresolved death of Marsha P Johnson, a transgender rights pioneer, as well as the issue of anti-transgender violence and the social context that allows it to happen. But the film also celebrates the longstanding culture of resistance within the transgender community, as personified by Marsha and her friend and collaborator, Sylvia Rivera.

After the film, join us for a talkback featuring voices of transgender people of color.

In light of recent controversies regarding the making of the film, Exeuctive Director, Phyllis Harris, said "I think there may be an opportunity to address the controversy in a way that is civil and honest about the beauty and power of lifting up Marsha P. Johnson's story as well as the challenges racism or racial bias brings."

This event is free and open to the public. We have committed to showing this film without cost to anyone to ensure that those without financial resources are not prevented from attending.
