OSSE's Division of Elementary, Secondary and Specialized Education (ESSE), in partnership with key stakeholders, is launching a Community Schools Community of Practice (CoP) in the 2016-17 school year. The CoP will offer nine sessions, beginning in September 2016 through May 2017, for all District of Columbia schools to receive training and technical assistance on creating and sustaining a community school. All trainings will be held at OSSE, 810 First St. NE.
Topics of discussion will consist of:
Setting the Stage for a Community Schools CoP
This session will focus on the introduction of OSSE’s first CoP, creating a mission and vision for the CoP, introduction to community schools and how schools can become a community school. It will be helod on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on the Third Floor Grand Hall, Side B.
Start Up/School Administration Buy-in
This session will focus on areas to consider when starting up a community school (e.g. relationship building with a collaborative approach, communication styles and goal setting and alignment). This session will also host a panel discussion opportunity for schools to learn from best practices from other successful community schools. It will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on the Third Floor Grand Hall Side B.
This month’s session will discuss Evaluation/Data with emphasis on national data, OSSE evaluation report results, and how to access data. There will also be a panel discussion on how to use the data to inform practice, set goals, and communicate outcomes with stakeholders. It will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on the Third Floor Grand Hall, Side A.
This session will focus on partnership building (i.e. why are partnerships essential to community schools?), taking an inventory and determining needs and building a collaborative partnership. This session will also host a panel discussion opportunity for schools to learn best practices from other successful community schools. It will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on the Third Floor Grand Hall, Side A.
