Event description

Description

CRAFT is a highly-effective, evidence-based, program of support for family members living with a loved one (i.e. partner or adult son/daughter) who is using alcohol or drugs problematically but who refuses to enter treatment. CRAFT teaches these family members (concerned significant others – CSOs) how to change their own behavior toward the substance using family member in a carefully orchestrated manner. More specifically, CSOs learn to manage their environment so that appropriate behavior is effectively rewarded, drinking or drug use is discouraged, and engagement in treatment is encouraged.

The CRAFT program has three major goals:

  • Decrease the family member’s substance use;
  • Get the substance user into treatment; and
  • Increase the CSO’s own happiness, independent of the substance misuser’s treatment status.

Who Should Attend:

If you’ve got a husband, wife, son, daughter, close friend, or other loved one who is suffering from drugs or alcohol addiction or you are a paraprofessional working with family members of addicted individuals, this training is for you. Expertise in substance abuse is not necessary.

The CRAFT program is a very active process that utilizes role-plays and other behavioral skills-training exercises during sessions, and homework assignments between sessions.

Training

As part of the ADM Board’s commitment to support the development of family focused approaches for those affected by substance misuse, we plan to pilot and test this innovative family orientated program within the region. Dr Robert Meyers, who has developed and researched CRAFT, has agreed to deliver a three day training. All days of the training are required to successfully complete the training. This will take place on August 28th-30th at the County of Summit ADM Board in the Summit County Public Health Auditorium.

Times:
August 28th from 8:30am – 4:00pm
August 29th from 9:00am – 4:30pm
August 30th from 9:00am – 12:00pm

Costs: FREE
Space is limited, therefore registration is required.

Several randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach. These studies show that CRAFT-trained family members consistently are able to engage their substance-misusing loved one into treatment in nearly seven out of 10 cases. Notably, the program is effective with ethnically diverse populations, across various types of relationships (spouses, parent-adult child), and without regard for the particular drug of abuse (alcohol, cocaine etc).
