ABOUT THE ARTIST AND PROJECT:

Maren Hassinger (born 1947 in Los Angeles, California, lives and works in Harlem, New York) is a multi-disciplinary artist working across performance, installation, sculpture, and video, who is most known for her meditations on nature and community. Hassinger's Monuments was commissioned by the Studio Museum for the Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem in 2018. The original installation included eight site-specific sculptures that Hassinger created in response to the park's environment, including its chess tables, flower beds, and rock formations. Two of these Monuments will take on a new life at deCordova as they are revitalized with branches from deCordova's grounds and installed by our local community members.
