Event description
Our much beloved Annual Day of Giving is back for its 6th year! Join with family and fellow community members for a joyous service day.

About this Event

Please note: This is a family event so every child needs a supervising adult. Please register for each student and adult participating for one project, pay for pizza lunch (if desired) and bring signed waiver to expedite check-in. A $10 donation will earn you a super-cool, newly designed Community Heroes t-shirt (details/size selection to follow soon)!

Join other Community Heroes families for an amazing morning of community service projects as part of our 6th annual Day of Giving! The event is co-hosted by Mary Jane Burke, Marin County Superintendent of Schools and the Marin County Office of Education (MCOE).

Meet at MCOE offices at 8:40 am for check-in, refreshments and kickoff to the day's festivities. Some projects will take place right on site, and some out in the community after the opening program (or after some prep work). For most on-site projects there should be an opportunity to do more than one project (i.e., make seed tape and then make a cape or blanket later) so please sign up for one primary project and we can cycle through. When all projects are completed, we will reconvene and share our stories at our lunch program back at the MCOE from 12-1pm.

Please register for one project and join us for what will be a heart-warming and gratifying experience serving our community! Finalized projects (as of 2/9) include:

1. Planting and Farm Prep Project (20 spots): Make seed tape, seed packets and card wool for wonderful Slide Ranch! Learn great gardening and farming application tips as you prepare carrot and radish seed tape, clean and package tithonia/sunflower seeds, and brush/prepare wool shorn from resident sheep to use for felting and making yarn.

2. Venetia Valley garden restoration (led by Marin School of Environmental Leadership students) (20 spots): Got a green thumb? Help spruce up our neighborhood school’s garden along with your fellow community members.

3. McInnis Park Beautification Project (40 spots): Rain or shine! Plan to dig in the dirt as part of a major planting project along the main entrance. Trash pick up too! Supplies (and some snacks) will be provided by Marin Parks.

4. Superhero capes for superhero kids (led by Marin School of the Arts student) (30 spots): Make superhero capes for hospitalized children at UCSF Children's Hospital of Mission Bay and Children's Hospital Oakland. Crafting for a cause that helps lifts spirits too!

5. Comfort blankets for kids (led by Marin Catholic students) (20 spots): Craft handmade, no-sew blankets for children at Center for Domestic Peace and UCSF Children's Hospitals. These cozy blankets with special hand-tied knots offer a warm embrace to recipients.

6. Feeding Stomachs and Souls (led by Marin Academy students) (20 spots): Calling all Master Chef Juniors! Prepare a hearty meal to be delivered local shelters and learn about social enterprise, Wonderbag, and its local and global applications!

7. Care and comfort kits for local shelters and Paradise families (45 spots): Assemble customized self care/comfort kits for Homeward Bound, Center for Domestic Peace (spa kits), St. Vincent’s (hygiene) and other charities serving Paradise fire families in their time of need.

8. Singing for Paradise (20 spots): Love to sing? Singing for a great cause is even more fun! After practicing a few numbers (music to be provided in advance), the group will head out into the community (Northgate Mall/Farmer’s Market) to spread the joy of song and collect donations that will benefit Butte County fire survivors.

9. Book collection, bag decoration and distribution for expectant moms at Marin Community Clinic + clinic tour (20 spots): Collect (in advance) children’s books as starter kits for young families, fill and decorate bags and deliver to expectant moms at MCC. You’ll also take a tour of this great local healthcare facility.
