Description

CHW Core Competency Training

May 31, 2019 to July 17, 2019

(2 half day sessions per week - 4 hours per day)

Community Health Workers (CHWs) are instrumental in addressing health needs globally. In the US, they are recognized as "critical" to addressing social determinants of health and as the key to improving population health. CHWs represent a broad group of healthcare and grassroots workers with a variety of roles and names.

Extensive evidence demonstrates that models utilizing CHWs result in better outcomes across a variety of health issues. CHWs enhance the services offered by local health and social service providers -- with the goal of facilitating access to resources services, and improving the quality and cultural competence of service delivery.

"Anatomy of A Growing Workforce"

With the State Innovation Model (SIM), the face of health care is changing in CT, and around the country we need to be ready to this change. Southwestern AHEC is working closely with the SIM CHW Advisory Committee to bring recognition to Community Health Workers through Certification.

What you will learn:

This 8 week, 72-hour program is rooted in a popular education approach. Its aim is to enhance the knowledge and abilities of Community Health Workers and build their capacity to promote health equity as well as use these core competencies in their professional growth.

With this training, you will build your capacity and understand:

  • The Role and Evolution of the CHW field in the US.

  • To define Public Health, Social Determinants of Health and Health Disparities.

  • To define Health Equity, how it relates to population health and the role CHWs play.

  • To develop and build capacity on the core competencies and build the framework for client-centered delivery of services.

To learn more about taking the training, please call or email Fernando Morales, Assistant Director, Southwestern AHEC, Inc., at 203.372-5503, Ext. 19 or fernandom@swctahec.org
