Community Grief Ritual @ the Sebastopol Grange

About this Event

On this day, we will come together to create a space for our grief. All too often, we hold our sorrows - for what we have lost, for the tragedies happening all around us in the world, for the places in ourselves that have not known love - close to ourselves. Many of us fear what will happen if we allow ourselves to fully feel and be seen. Together, we will lean into the vulnerability, trust, and surrender needed to remember how to grieve together as a community.

Through small and large group sharing, movement, rhythm, song, sacred witness, and community ritual, we will come to see that we can not do this alone. We need each other to metabolize our individual and collective grief and to remember our belonging to ourselves, to community, to earth, and to the universe. We will find greater aliveness by keeping our hearts open to the living world and its sorrows. We welcome you into this sacred container.

The ritual is inspired and informed by the Dagara tradition of Malidoma Somé and Sobonfu Somé, as it has been carried by Laurence Cole and Francis Weller. With humility and gratitude, we intend to respectfully honor this lineage by stewarding this gift of grief ritual that Sobonfu and Malidoma offered to the western world.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Will Rogers has been apprenticing to community grief tending for two years. This has entailed training with Francis Weller and Laurence Cole, supporting Laurence in offering grief ritual to communities on several occasions, and facilitating regular grief rituals at the ocean with his closer circles. Will feels honored to continue widening the circle to include you all in these seasonal grief rituals in Sebastopol. On his journey navigating what it is to be human in these times of ruptured relationship, Will has been both mentor and mentee through various nature connection and cultural repair organizations over the past several years. He strongly believes that grief ritual will be an integral part of what is needed in the great turning, as we reach out to find each other amidst the darkness of these uncertain times.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZER

After her first grief ritual, Megan Eberhardt was taken over by a fiery passion to live amongst people who gather together with regularity to grieve. This came 6 months after a similar fire inspired her to start organizing community song circles. So she put out the call, Will responded, and this is what has emerged. Megan has devoted the last 8 years to becoming fully present through a 7+ year apprenticeship with Li Walter, aka Stargazer Li, and 5 years of study with Martín Prechtel. She brings all of this and her Virgo moon to the organizing of her monthly community song circles and now seasonal grief rituals. When not exploring her grief with other humans she might be out teaching the stars, inviting people into deep presence in Asian bodywork and astro calendar sessions, or tending to body and home in her little nest on a hill under mighty oaks.

TESTIMONIALS

I still carry the grief ritual with me and all the goodness found there. I was so impressed with [Megan] and Will. I felt so cared for and held by the container that Will was able to create, and because of that I was able to be fully in the experience. Since the ritual I’ve found it easier to grieve small things and notice when I need to grieve. It has been so healing and grounding. -Brittany E., Sebastopol, CA

My experience at the grief ritual was profoundly healing. Will and Megan's compassionate and skillful facilitation created a safe and loving container that felt both solid and flexible. The reflection and sharing during the first part of the day helped me feel safe and prepared for the ritual itself at the end of the day. There was a role for everyone, including folks who weren't yet ready to participate in the grieving aspect of the ritual. Witnessing other participants go deeply into their grief and survive it, and even look lighter and freer after the experience, gave me the courage to try it for myself. Having the support of a witness behind me, and the community of fellow grievers on either side of me, allowed me to surrender to grief in a way I have never been able to do before. The parts of me who have been so terrified of feeling my grief were able to learn that it truly is safe and healing to do so, and since the ritual I have been able to feel and express grief and other difficult emotions with much more ease. The grief ritual opened a door for me and the healing has continued to expand since then. -M.F., Sebastopol, CA

Grief rituals provide a space for us to be seen fully for all that we are. It teaches us to deeply hold and love ourselves and one another. It reminds us of how tender and precious we all are as humans, and in that, softens our hearts towards all beings. Will held such a beautiful space, very mindfully and carefully opening us up throughout the day, helping us to feel safe and comfortable, grounding and connecting us through poetry, song and movement, taking us on a journey to the depths of our emotion to feel who we are at our core. -Emma M.
