Event Details

Join us on Monday, October 30, 2017 at 6:30 pm for a FREE workshop on Community Engagement and Community Coaching - Supports for Individuals for Developmental Disabilities.

The Medicaid Waiver programs for people with developmental disabilities in Virginia were redesigned in 2016.  The redesign was needed to comply with the Department of Justice VA Settlement Agreement and new federal requirements, known as the “CMS Rule” governing home and community based services. The CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) Rule requires that people with disabilities receiving waiver services have full access to the benefits of community living and receive services in the most integrated setting appropriate.

The Day Support Waiver is now the Building Independence Waiver
The Developmental Disabilities Waiver is now the Individual and Family Supports Waiver
The Intellectual Disabilities Waiver is now the Community Living Waiver.
All three waivers are referred to as Developmental Disabilities (DD) Waivers.

Two of the new services that were added to the Developmental Disabilities (DD) Waivers are Community Engagement and Community Coaching.  These services/supports are intended to help people with disabilities gain full access and inclusion into the community.  We hope you will join us for this presentation on October 30th to learn about the new services and how they can be utilized to successfully involve individuals with disabilities in their communities.

This workshop is intended for:

- parents/guardians of individuals with developmental disabilities,
- self-advocates,
- providers, and/or
- educators.

Presenter: Heather Norton, MSW

Heather is the Director of Community Support Services for the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.  She has worked in the field of developmental disabilities for the past twenty seven years and currently sits on the Virginia APSE Board as well as the Virginia Autism Council.  She started her career in Pennsylvania at a summer camp for individuals with intellectual disabilities and stayed with this company in their residential program for 10 years.  After this she worked for two children’s behavioral health programs supporting children with various mental health diagnoses and autism.   She relocated to Virginia in 2004, at which time she started working for Southside Virginia Training Center as the Director of Program Services where she oversaw the vocational, habilitation, and program centers.  Prior to working at DBHDS, she worked for Chesterfield Community Services Board, first as the services manager for CES and then as the Assistant Director of Community Services.
