Event description

Description

Solid neighborhoods are whole, healthy, and engaged communities where all people are empowered to pursue their hopes, dreams, and aspirations...where lives are transformed by faith and trust, and personal fulfillment is experienced through abundant caring and grace. Holy Trinity is committed to working with our strategic partners to help Akron’s neighborhoods experience just such transformation. CD4AP has done this work in Columbus. Come and learn how we can work together to accomplish these same goals in Akron.

About the Presenter

Katelin Hansen, PhD (@KatelinHansen7) serves as the Strategic Initiatives Director for the faith-based nonprofit, Community Development for All People, and as the Minister of Music for the United Methodist Church for All People, a multirace and multiclass church in Columbus, OH. As Minister of Music, Katelin helps facilitate a worshipful setting that reflects God's multicultural Church each Sunday morning by interweaving a wide array of music styles into each service. As Strategic Initiatives Director, Katelin trains individuals, nonprofits, and church ministries in the areas of asset based community development, cultural competency, church growth, and leadership development to build the Front Porch to the Kingdom of God. Katelin is also the editor of By Their Strange Fruit (@BTSFblog), an online ministry facilitating racial justice and reconciliation for the sake of the Gospel. She received her doctorate degree in Neuroscience from The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, where she studied the role of miRNA regulation in hippocampal-dependent learning and memory. Prior to that, she received her B.A. in vocal performance and B.S. in biology from the University of Richmond in Richmond, VA.

About C4AP and CD4AP

The United Methodist Church for All People grew out of the message of unconditional love offered by the Free Store and the atmosphere of hospitality it created.

We are intentionally cross-class and multi-racial. The church welcomes each of us as we are, no matter who we are or what we have done.

Our worship reflects diversity with music ranging from old hymns to Contemporary Christian to gospel music. Everyone is welcomed just as they are.

Community Development for All People (CD4AP) was formed as a faith-based community development corporation in 2003 with the mission of improving the quality of life for persons on the South Side of Columbus. The flagship ministry of CD4AP is the Free Store, which distributes over $2 million in free clothing and household items and serves over 20,000 individuals each year.

Programming has expanded over the years in response to the dreams and aspirations of the community. Since inception, CD4AP and its collaborators have repaired or constructed over 400 affordable, high-quality homes and apartments for a total of ~$62 million in housing development.

CD4AP cares for the physical health of the community through its H.E.A.L. (Healthy Eating and Living) initiative. It’s a program designed to accompany individuals as they set goals to improve their health. H.E.A.L. includes a fresh produce market from which nearly 600,000 pounds of produce are distributed each year to over 1,500 families. H.E.A.L also provides health education classes, cooking classes, and exercise opportunities to the community. We lead efforts to combat infant mortality on the South Side through our First Birthdays initiative to help babies thrive.

CD4AP serves hundreds of students through its youth development programming. During the school year, CD4AP provides a free after school program in partnership with the nearby Lincoln Park Elementary School. In the summer, CD4AP provides a Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools program. In conjunction, CD4AP cultivates rich relationships with parents to engage families at all levels.
