Event description

Description

What it is:

The Community Conversations Cafe is a series that engages Heiskell Library community members (or potential members) in a moderated, open discussion on the topics most important to them, with the aim of creating greater understanding from our combined viewpoints and experiences, as well as informing future actions and strategic planning. This is NOT a lecture.

Why Attend?

This program offers a chance to engage in thoughtful, moderated, productive dialogue, gives everyone a chance to both speak and hear from each other, and work together towards pulling out some insights from our combined experiences. It's a chance to make your voice heard, learn from others, and contribute towards a larger goal. You might meet new people. Plus there will be refreshments.

The first series will focus on the topics:

  • Experiences of Inclusion + Exclusion in Our Community
  • What role does Information Access, Literacy, and the Media Play?
  • Planning for a More Inclusive Future

What Happens After We Talk?

The outcomes will be reported back in a blog post from the library and taken into consideration in future planning and actions.

This program will be facilitated by trained Library staff, along with our community partners: American Council of the Blind and National Federation of the Blind.

Dates:

You are encouraged to attend both meetings, but it is not required. You may sign up for either one or both.

First meeting: November 4th, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Second meeting: December 2nd, 1:00 PM- 2:30 PM

There is the possibility of additional conversation cafes on other topics chosen by community partners if there is interest in continuing this series.

About Community Conversations at The New York Public Library:

The brand new Community Conversations initiative at The New York Public Library introduces a space for discussion on local topics that matter most to you. Local librarians at select branches will co-facilitate these dialogues with community organizations, inviting anyone and everyone to the table to share and listen. Let’s create a truly democratic space where we can connect together through meaningful dialogue! Learn more and browse all of our conversations here.
