Description

Elder abuse isn’t just bruises. Elder abuse is any intentional or neglectful act that leads to harm of a vulnerable older adult.


IT CAN INCLUDE:

• Abandonment
• Exploitation
• Neglect
• Financial, physical or sexual abuse
• Psychological/emotional abuse


SOME OF THE WARNING SIGNS:
• Sudden changes in written will or other financial documents
• Unexplained disappearance of funds or valuable possessions
• Shame, anxiety, embarrassment
• Isolation by caregiver
• Withdrawal, depression
• Fear of a particular person
• Unexplained bruises/injuries
• Unkempt appearance

WHO IS AT RISK?
Elder abuse can occur anywhere and affects men and women across all socio-economic groups, culture and races. Women and frail elders are most likely to be victimized.


SIGNIFICANT RISK FACTORS INCLUDE:
• Dementia or other mental impairment
• Physical disability
• Isolation
• Mental health and/or substance abuse issues by either the abuser or victim


WHO ARE THE ABUSERS?
• Family members, often a spouse or adult child
• Hired caregivers/personal assistants
• “The new best friend”
• Neighbors
• Fiduciaries


What can I do?
• Know the signs of elder abuse
• Act as a resource to elders when they are abused and know how to guide them to further assistance
• Encourage intergenerational respect through mixers
or group activities
