Experience what it takes to communicate effectively when a crisis hits. Join us for a half-day communications workshop and luncheon presented by the Agriculture Institute of Florida.
Participants will learn the key components of a good crisis communication plan and take part in a simulated crisis situation.
The workshop will conclude with the compelling, first-person experience and lessons learned by the communications professionals from Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, when one of the costliest tornadoes in U.S. history ripped through the hospital in 2011.

12:30 PM - Communicating After a Disaster: Lessons Learned from Joplin, Missouri
Miranda Lewis / Allison Craig, Mercy Health Foundation Joplin
Miranda Lewis and Allison Craig will recount their experiences in the aftermath of the EF5 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. Their presentation will cover the storm’s immediate and long-term impacts on their hospital and community. Topics covered will include media management, disaster planning, environmental challenges and internal and external communication. They will also discuss physical and mental demands and mitigating the realities of working in crisis situations.
Miranda Lewis received her Master of Organizational Leadership from Evangel University on May 6, 2011. Having also earned her undergraduate degree in communication from Evangel in 2008, she felt well-equipped to succeed in her career as media/promotions coordinator in the Public Relations department at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Missouri.
What she didn't know that sunny graduation morning was that in just two weeks, her academic preparation - as well as her life skills and her faith - would be tested in a way for which no classroom or boardroom could have possibly prepared her.
On May 22, 2011, her lifelong home of Joplin, Missouri, was hit by the single deadliest tornado in the United States since modern recordkeeping began. And the hospital where Lewis works took a direct hit by the twister that cut a 6-mile-long and 3/4-mile-wide swath through the city. Miranda was suddenly thrust into the media spotlight in the nation's biggest news story.
Grant Heston, Associate Vice President for Communications and Public Affairs for the University of Central Florida, serves as spokesperson, issues management and crisis response leader for the second largest university in the United States. He leads the university's team that is responsible for media relations, internal communications and coordinating with partner organizations and institutions.
Prior to joining UCF, he was the corporate communications manager for the Orlando Utilities Commission. Grant has an extensive background in media, from senior producer for Orlando Sentinel.com to writer for CBS Sportsline to reporter for a community newspaper in Highlands County. He earned his bachelor of science in journalism from the University of Florida
Lisa Lochridge, APR, serves as director of the Public Affairs Division, managing FFVA's communication with its members and the media on topics ranging from food safety to immigration reform. The division also is responsible for a variety of communication channels, including the association's Web site, monthly e-magazine, weekly newsletters and member bulletins.
Specializing in media relations and crisis communication, Lochridge came to FFVA in 2006 after serving as vice president of CBR Public Relations in Orlando. Prior to that, she was a veteran journalist, holding numerous local news editor positions at the Orlando Sentinel for 21 years. A Florida native, Lochridge holds a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's degree in communication from the University of Central Florida. She is nationally accredited in public relations.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
- You do not need to bring your printed ticket to the event; however, you may prefer to do so in case there is any question about your registration. We do recommend that you print and save a copy for your records.
What is the refund policy?
- Requests for a refund of registration fees will be granted ONLY if received by email to email@example.com by Friday, April 24. We appreciate your understanding.
The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
- If you are unable to attend, but would like someone to attend in your place, please print your ticket and send it with the guest who is taking your place. We will collect the ticket and make the appropriate substitution.
