Derrick Brandon Clifton ’12, ’16 MS

Derrick Clifton is a writer, speaker and commentator focusing on the intersections of identity, culture, and politics. Clifton holds two degrees from Northwestern University, including an MSJ from the Medill School of Journalism. He won the 2016 national award for newspaper commentary from the National Association of Black Journalists for Chicago Reader columns about the shooting of Laquan McDonald by Chicago police. Clifton also won the 2016 Peter Lisagor Award for Best News Column or Commentary from the Chicago regional chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for the “On Identity & Culture” column for the Reader.

In 2017, his story on the Black Lives Matter movement netted a National Association of Black Journalists Award for Newspaper Feature Writing.

On Thursday, November 30, Clifton will discuss his range of work and what it has been like for him to make the transition from journalism into PR. He has hopped between both fields in the past 5-7 years, and is in the early stages of crafting a book.
