Common Sense Economics Teacher Training Workshop
Friday, March 20, 2015 from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (EDT)
This exciting one-day workshop for RI, MA, and CT high school teachers (and teachers-in-training) will focus on the operation of markets, the importance of entrepreneurship, the institutional elements of a prosperous economy, the economics of political decision-making and the important principles of personal finance. This course pairs the primer Common Sense Economics: What Everyone Should Know about Wealth and Prosperity with media technology, making for an engaging experience. Professor Joseph Calhoun from Florida State University and Professor Carol Sweeney from Florida Gulf Coast University will be the presenters. Continental breakfast and buffet lunch are included in the $10 event ticket price. Wireless Internet will be available, and if possible, participants should bring their own laptops. At the completion of the workshop, all participants will receive a free copy of the Common Sense Economics book and the package of electronic resources.
A limited amount of funding is available to compensate Districts for substitute teachers (up to $75 per attending teacher) on a first-come, first served basis. Please email requests for substitute teacher funding to Dr. Margaret Brooks at firstname.lastname@example.org. Dr. Brooks is the Common Sense workshop organizer, President of RI Council for Economic Education and RI Jump$tart Coalition, and Bridgewater State University Professor of Economics.
All participants will receive a letter after the workshop that documents their hours of attendance at this one-day Common Sense Economics teacher training program.
In addition, Rhode Island College is providing an optional opportunity for Common Sense Economics participants to receive 0.65 Continuing Education Units (6.5 contact hours; undergraduate and graduate options are available) by
*Registering in advance through RIC offices
*Making payment to RIC in the amount of $30
*Attending all Common Sense Economics programming on March 20.
