Common Ground in Science and Faith
Event Information
About this Event
Do science and Christian faith have something to offer to each other and to the world around us? Or are these pursuits locked in separate worlds, achieving an uneasy truce at best?
Join us for a thought-provoking evening featuring influential author and theologian Richard Mouw and Cornell geneticist Praveen Sethupathy, recognized as one of the nation's top emerging genomics researchers. The discussion will be moderated by BioLogos President and author Deborah Haarsma.
Exploring genetics and creation, faith and Scripture, their discussion will reveal a deep resonance that fuels curiosity, learning, and worship of our Creator.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Speakers
Richard J. Mouw is professor of Faith and Public Life at Fuller Theological Seminary, where he also served as president from 1993 to 2013. Before coming to Fuller in 1985, he served for 17 years as professor of philosophy at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. A graduate of Houghton College, Richard received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Chicago. He is the author of 19 books and has served on many editorial boards, including currently Books and Culture. In 2007, Princeton Theological Seminary awarded him the Abraham Kuyper Prize for Excellence in Reformed Theology and Public Life.
Praveen Sethupathy is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences and Director of the Center for Genomics at Cornell University, where he directs a research lab focused on genomic approaches to understand human health and disease. He received his BA degree from Cornell University and his PhD in Genomics from the University of Pennsylvania. After completing a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Human Genome Research Institute under the mentorship of Dr. Francis Collins, he moved in 2011 to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics. The same year he was selected by Genome Technology as one of the nation's top 25 rising young investigators in genomics. In 2017, he returned to Cornell University as an Associate Professor. Praveen has authored over 95 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals and has served as a reviewer for over 35 different journals. Recent honors include a faculty merit award for outstanding teaching and mentoring and the prestigious American Diabetes Association Pathway To Stop Diabetes Research Accelerator, which is awarded to only three people per year. Praveen has been an invited speaker for the Veritas Forum, has served on the advisory board for the AAAS Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion, and serves on the Board of Directors for the BioLogos Foundation, which seeks to convey harmony between science and faith. He lives in Ithaca, NY with his wife and three children.
Deborah Haarsma is President of BioLogos. She is a frequent speaker on modern science and Christian faith at research universities, churches, and public venues like the National Press Club. Her work appears in several recent books, including Four Views on Creation, Evolution, and Design and Christ and the Created Order. She wrote the book Origins with her husband and fellow physicist, Loren Haarsma, presenting the agreements and disagreements among Christians regarding the history of life and the universe. She edited the anthology Delight in Creation: Scientists Share Their Work with the Church with Rev. Scott Hoezee. Previously, Haarsma served as professor and chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Calvin College. She is an experienced research scientist, with several publications in the Astrophysical Journal and the Astronomical Journal on extragalactic astronomy and cosmology. She has studied large galaxies, galaxy clusters, the curvature of space, and the expansion of the universe using telescopes around the world and in orbit. Haarsma completed her doctoral work in astrophysics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her undergraduate work in physics and music at Bethel University. She and Loren enjoy science fiction and classical music, and live in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
