Event description
Personal Historian, Martie McNabb of Show & Tales, will host an evening of sharing coming-out stories, each told through one object.

About this event

Join personal historian Martie McNabb for “Show&Tale: Coming-Out Mementos and Stories,” a unique, interactive event build around sharing your story in relation to an object you present and show to the audience.

For a majority of the members of the LGBTQ community, coming out constituted one of life’s most significant events. What did it mean to you? The act of coming out to yourself or to others? Awakening to a role as an activist?

In Martie’s experience, you probably still cherish a coming-out memento — a particular object, document, or photo that plays a nostalgic role in your story.

  • Did you find a suffragette sash in your great-grandmother’s attic?
  • A faded photo of your great uncle, a confirmed bachelor, in drag?
  • A clipping showing a relative participating in the early fight for civil rights?
  • A photo of you and your friends in ACT-UP, demonstrating for AIDS funding?

This interactive evening features guided sharing of coming-out stories of all kinds. You’ll learn more about yourself while connecting with other professionals as we share the stories that helped make us who we are today.

Read about Show & Tales in the Wall Street Journal.

To help manage time and have room for many different stories, tickets are divided into Viewer and Participant categories:

  • Select a Viewer ticket If you know that you just want to listen and enjoy others’ coming-out stories.
  • Select a Participant ticket if you want an opportunity to share a coming-out story through an object that you present virtually to the group.
  • Your ticket type is flexible if you change your mind about participation. Our goal is to help ensure an evening of diverse coming-out stories and camaraderie.

No need to practice. Everyone is welcome to share. Four-minute time limit. No judges, no prizes, no competition. Just an enriching evening of appreciating the personal stories of those in the LGBTQ community.

About Our Host and Guide: Martie McNabb, Founder of Show & Tales

Personal Historian/Visual Artist Martie McNabb has been haunted by all the vivid life stories that get shoved into a box, a bag, or a suitcase. Channeling her passion, she dedicates her work to creating visual narratives from clients' photo, document, and memorabilia archives. Martie works with individuals, families, organizations, and corporate clients – all who want to save their history and share their story.

“As people began talking about their objects, a connection grew -- not just between the speaker and those of us listening, but between everyone in the room. We were sharing something precious and intimate. Every story surprised, not just with the history behind the object but with the emotions wrapped around it. Sharing my story with this group of strangers was easier than I expected. The room was warm, friendly, and without pressure, as if I were among friends who shared the same values.”

Bill Shapiro, Author, “What We Keep,” and former Editor-In-Chief, Life Magazine
