Description

Climate Proofing the Midlands Engine through innovations in Transport and Agrifood

This co-design workshop is organised by the University of Leicester, jointly with the East Midlands SatApps CoE.

As a significant contributor to the environmental research agenda of the Midlands, the University of Leicester is actively engaged with a range of partners and stakeholders in regional economic development in the following areas:

  • Transport Systems and Engineering (addressing impacts on air quality, health, carbon, intelligent transport systems)
  • Future Food Processing (from field to plate –land management, addressing agricultural yield prediction, greenhouse gas accounting, biodiversity and ecosystem services assessment, and logistics)

Within the context of a broad portfolio of strategic projects and regional engagements, and the recent announcement of the governments new Industrial Strategy, we would like to invite leading stakeholders in our region to work with us to refine and prioritise regional challenges.

As an immediate opportunity, we are preparing a bid to a major programme “Regional Impact from Science of the Environment” (RISE). This would fund up to £5M in programme activity over the next 4 years http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/available/schemes/ao-esip/. Climate Proofing the Midlands Engine through innovations in Transport and Agrifood (COMETA) project will be designed to develop new commercial solutions and opportunities to deliver economic, environmental and societal benefit through the application of state-of-the-art scientific research. We are building a broad regional consortium to deliver this and benefit from its ambitious agenda.

The Workshop is split in 2 sessions:

AM session: Academic capabilities

PM session: Challenges of the market place

Please indicate in which session you intend to participate.

Why get involved?

The COMETA project will enable you:

- To leverage funding and technology to help you deliver benefits such as reduced carbon footprint and fuel costs to your company

- To engage with a range of regional stakeholders (e.g. scientists, local government, businesses, and charities) to tackle Midlands Engine-wide issues

- To position yourselves for competitive advantage in:

  • Next Generation Transport Systems and Engineering (technology development to deliver impacts on air quality, health, carbon, intelligent transport systems)
  • Future Food Processing (from field to plate – addressing efficient food processing, zero-waste food chains, food product innovation, precision agriculture, carbon and logistics)
