About this event

Comedy Night at IL Pirata -16th Anniversary Show image

If you started comedy in the Bay Area or passed through some time before 2018, you’ve heard of the Brainwash Café. Every Thursday, for nearly 20 years, the legend Tony Sparks hosted a magical open mic at the SF staple café/laundromat, giving stage time to hundreds of starting and starving (some literally) comedians. The mic was special and unique for so many reasons, but mostly for its supportive atmosphere which would also allow you to bomb catastrophically in order to get your chops, all while locals would order lattes and wait for their soiled clothes to wash and dry. In December 2017, the Brainwash Café closed forever, and most Bay Area comics were devastated, especially me. Nothing could replace it. And nothing will.

Jay Rich hails from the Bay Area and has created his own brand merging his first love of poetry with his natural born talent as a comedian. Jay Rich attacks every venue with a refreshing flow and charisma that has been missing on today's comedy circuit. The host of Dorsey's Locker's Blue Candle Tuesdays from 2010-2012, Jay Rich effectively carried the torch for one of the longest running Open Mics in the Bay Area. He was also the host of the 2014 Bay Area Black Music awards where he was nominated and awarded the title of Best Male Spoken Word Artist. Jay recently represented the Bay Area at The Nephew Tommy Uncontrolled Comedy Show in Oakland, catching the attention of some of the industry's top players. He has shared stages with some of the top performers in the industry, including Paul Mooney, Dick Gregory, Tommy Davidson, KC & JoJo, and Sisqo. Producing some of the Bay Area’s premiere comedy shows, Jay Rich is rising quickly! As a comedian, his witty stories and one liners will have you literally falling out of your seats and holding your sides every time he steps up to the mic.

JUSTIN LUCAS has performed at the legendary Purple Onion, the Punchline, Cobb’s, and other popular Bay Area comedy venues. Justin has successfully entered a number of comedy competitions, such as “The Mic Is Hot Comedy Competition” (2013, 1st place winner), and the “San Francisco International Comedy Competition” (2012, semi-finalist), and his awards include the 2015 “Bay Area Reporter” award for Best Male Comedian. After branching out into acting, both stage and television, he appeared in the HBO series, Looking, Season 2, opposite Jonathan Groff. An eclectic entertainer, Justin continues his stand-up comedy career, performs sketch comedy, currently appearing with the San Francisco based group, “Killing My Lobster.”

Organizer LOCAL FOLKS x IL PIRATA COMEDY x SF COMEDY CRAWL

Organizer of Comedy Night at IL Pirata -16th Anniversary Show

The 1st Fridays of the month are Comedy at Il Pirata, produced by Kiko Breiz, and this October 2021 is the 16th year celebration of the show! 16 years is quite a feat for an independent comedy show in SF (a mark currently shared by the Romane Event, and surpassed only by Tony Sparks 19 years hosting at the BrainWash). What Kiko has done at Il Pirata is maintain consistency with style. Kiko has built a solid comedy following, from Speech Therapy to Local Folks, month after month And is the creator of San Francisco's Only Comedy Crawl which is in its 5th year. His show has been described as “Hip-Hop meets comedy,” and in this hipster homogenizing time, it’s exactly what the doctor ordered - for comedians and audiences alike. Kiko has a keen eye and a great sense of humor. He’s introduced strong talent to hungry audiences for 16 solid years. Congratulations on this achievement, Kiko! Catch a show folks: first Fridays, 8pm, Il Pirata (2007 16th @ Utah) SF
