A hilarious stand-up comedy show with immigrant and first generation comedians hosted by Temple Shalom for their 60th anniversary.

About this Event

Comedy as a Second Language goes into the community!

As part of their 60th anniversary celebration, Temple Shalom is hosting this great show. We have an amazing line-up of performers: Simone, Yasmin Elhady and Christian Esgoto. This show of hilarious immigrant/first generation comics will have your sides splitting with laughter and your cheeks aching from smiling. Curious about the show? Check out an article in the DCist or see video clips from previous shows.

Meet the Performers

Simone is a Washington DC comedian who has performed on DC main stages such as the DC Improv, DC Drafthouse, The Kennedy Center, and other top locations for nationally touring headliners such as Amir K, Bob Marley, Langston Kerman, Cristela Alonzo, Fortune Feimster,Pete Davidson, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier and Iliza Shlesinger. Internationally, Simonehas performed in London, England, Paris, France, Toronto, Canada, Reykjavik, Iceland,Capetown, South Africa, and the exotic, Buffalo, New York. With his distinctive perspective on American life and politics combines with a laid-back, friendly delivery, Simone evokes an animated, clever, and funny act. His eye for the absurdities of cultural politics and his unique writing and performance style wows audiences. Simone also loves his momma.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Christian Escoto began performing comedy after his high school graduation. Since then, he regularly performs around the DC area and the Baltimore region. Using his quick wit and stage persona, Christian entertains the audience with jokes and stories about growing up in DC area as a Filipino-American. He has performed multiple times at the DC Drafthouse Comedy Theater, the DC Improv, the Howard Theater, the State Theater, the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, the Lisner Auditorium and has opened for the national touring improv troupe the Groundlings and has open for Filipino comedians Rex Navarette and JR De Guzman, UK comedian Shazia Mirza, and Chilean comedian Fabrizio Capano.

Yasmin Elhady is the daughter of Libyan & Egyptian political refugees and a visibly Muslim American woman who grew up in Huntsville, Alabama—the most accepting part of the country. She’s an attorney, comedian, and relationship expert. Yasmin has been performing standup all over the DMV for almost 2 years and has been to London on a comedy tour called “The Super Muslim Comedy Tour.” Don’t worry, it wasn’t as bad as it sounds. You can catch her dishing relationship advice on Instagram @yasguru and some of her stand up @yaslaughs on YouTube.

Additional Info:

This event is open to the public but tickets must be purchased to attend. This show will be clean but the comedy is intended for adults. For that reason, we recommend ages 16+. Also, we expect the line-up to be as listed above but sometimes things happen and we need to make changes. We appreciate your understanding and promise it will still be a great show!
