Description

Come play in the dirt!!

A large portion of the planting was done last fall, but we have more for spring. We will be digging in the dirt Saturday, April 28th from 9am to 1pm, (with an alternate day of May 5th if we get rained out) in the northwest corner of the property. Lunch will be provided for our volunteers, with a brief presentation about the unique plan – sharing the opportunities, surprises and challenges for this project. We will provide hand tools, but if you would like to bring your own, as well as gloves, that would be great!

The unique mixture of old and new that is Westport Commons inspired a planting design patterned after a Missouri savanna. This plant community is designed to look and function more like plants do in nature: to be well adapted to their site, richly layered, diverse, packed with pollinators, and have a strong sense of harmony and place that connects us with our memory of nature.

This is the last piece to go in. As a part of a joint effort to accommodate the needs of Cultivate KC’s new facility on the north end of Plexpod Westport Commons, we were presented an exciting opportunity to pilot a unique green infrastructure stormwater management approach. The design manages stormwater runoff primarily utilizing soil, uses a broad range of native plants to enhance water movement and provide adaptive landscaping with lower maintenance costs / needs, and greatly improves soil quality which enhances carbon sequestration.

Even if you can't join us for planting, check out the project as we go forward!
