Event description

Meet Harold is an intermediate-level introduction to Del Close's seminal longform improv structure, Harold. Over the course of eight weeks, we will explore the structural elements of Harold—openings, scene work, group games, beats, callbacks and connections—as well as the guiding principles behind improv comedy's most essential longform. Harold is fun and relatively straightforward but offers endless expanse within its simple framework to explore ideas, build worlds and nurture relationships.

Through focused exercises and active guidance, students will learn to play fearlessly, listen intently, react honestly, play to the heights of their intelligence, embody characters with empathy, choose discovery over invention and "follow the fear" into the exciting unknown.

This course will meet 8 times for 3 hours and include 2 graduation performances.

This course is limited to 16 students and requires prior improv experience.

Classes will be held on Monday evenings, 7:00pm – 10:00pm from September 12, 2016 – November 7, 2016, excluding Halloween.

David Furfero, aka furf, is a veteran improviser who relocated to the East Bay in 2015. Originally from New York City, furf began his improv career at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in 2001. He has trained at the Peoples Improv Theater (PIT) and the Magnet Theater in New York and with members of Chicago’s Annoyance and iO Theaters. Among his instructors and mentors rank improv luminaries Armando Diaz, Mick Napier, Joe Bill, Mark Sutton, Susan Messing, David Razowsky, T.J. Jagadowski and Dave Pasquesi.

furf was a founding member of the PIT’s first house ensemble Shark vs. Buffalo, the Magnet Theater's Golden Ha! Rollers and erotic improv troupe Foreplay. He created and produced Ampers&nd, a weekly showcase for improv duos. Since 2004, he has been touring the world with his improv trio Surf ‘n Turf and most recently improvised as a member of Liquid Mind at Oakland’s Pan Theater. He has performed at the Chicago Improv Festival, UCB's Del Close Marathon, Philadelphia Improv Festival, Dublin Improv Festival, Toronto Improv Festival, Providence Improv Festival and New York City Improv Festival.

The Colossus Improv Company was founded in 2016 to support the East Bay's growing improv community. Colossus' mission is twofold: to encourage fearlessness, attentiveness and playfulness in its students and to produce meaningful longform improvisation that is thoughtful, satirical, political, emotional and, whenever possible, funny. Colossus' approach is inspired by the aggressive play of Chicago's Annoyance Theater, the listening and patience of TJ & Dave and the grounded philosophy of the Magnet Theater's Armando Diaz.
