In Loving Memory of Ivan:

Joy, Lindsey and Monica, are coordinating the esophageal awareness event in Colorado.

"This fundraiser is in honor of our father/husband, Roy Ivan Parrish, who passed away from Stage IV Esophageal Cancer on July 20th, 2014.

Our father began to experience symptoms of a cold in the spring of 2013. It seemed like a common cold, but he could not kick the side effects. His primary doctor decided to do some blood work and that is when the results showed we were dealing with more than just a cold.

Our father had suffered from GERD for many years, and this had turned into Barrett’s esophagus. However, he was diligent in his checkups and always went in for his scopes in a timely manner. By the time blood work came back, he was diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer in June 2013. The doctors said the cancer was aggressive and it grew very fast. We had another year of life with our father, but it was a tough one. As anyone knows that has experienced medical trials, there were a lot of ups and downs.

We wanted to find a way to help with researching and funding for esophageal cancer. As we began to look, there was not a lot of information or funding out there. For this event, our goal is to provide awareness of the causes of esophageal cancer, how important early detection is, and to help fund any medical advances possible.

Lastly, this is for Ivan, Texas A&M class of ‘76 alum (go Aggies!), and who was able to battle cancer without losing his great sense of humor!"

About the organizer

The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established to raise funds for awareness, early detection and research of esophageal cancer in hopes of a cure.™  www.salgi.org

The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation was established in remembrance of our beloved family member. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, godfather, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend and in his later years, a brave soldier against his battle with esophageal cancer.

When our loved one was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 1997, we did not know what esophageal cancer was or what was happening to our father.   Not only did we have to face the grim reality that our beloved family member was diagnosed with cancer but we had no where to turn for information about this horrifying disease.

After a little over a year of pain, struggle and suffering; his 'golden heart stopped beating and his hard working hands were at rest.'

We realized that there were many other families who felt the same heartache, uncertaintly, hopelessness and fear due to this horrific diesease. The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation was established in honor of all the men and women who have been affected by esophageal cancer.  Our mission is to raise awareness, encourage early detection and to fund research of esophageal of esophageal cancer...in hopes of a cure.™
