Event description

Description

Towering mountains, golden leaves, and the occasional dusting of snow make Colorado one of the best places for fall photography, and it's where I created my 5-year fall timelapse film. Our workshop begins on Thursday afternoon with a short meet and greet near the Telluride Gondola, and a sunset shoot near Telluride.

Over the next 3 days, we'll be spending as much time in the field as possible as well as a classroom session on editing timelapse sequences. Depending on conditions we may spend one late evening photographing the Milky Way. Our workshop will end after a sunrise shoot on Sunday morning.

WORKSHOP REGISTRATION - $695 (TRANSPORTATION AND LODGING NOT INCLUDED)

Overview of Skills & Topics Covered:

  • Location Scouting: We'll discuss the best locations for timelapses as well as how to find new and different angles on popular spots. We'll also cover techniques for planning the time to photograph, and researching/reading the weather.

  • Shooting: Camera setup for timelapses including settings such as ISO, aperture, shutter speed, interval, and length. Composition and settings for the various types of landscape locations encountered and ideas on how to create unique sequences like day to night.

  • Editing: We'll have 1 classroom session on Friday from 12-4 on importing, editing, and exporting timelapse sequences using Lightroom and LRTimelapse. We'll cover editing styles and choices as well as more broad ideas for creating a finished film.

Gear Needed:

  • A DSLR or mirrorless camera

  • A selection of lenses from wide angle to telephoto, the more choices the better. Please have one wide lens with an aperture of f/4 or faster

  • An intervalometer that works with your camera or built in app like the Sony Timelapse app. Please contact me if you need help selecting one.

  • Lots of batteries or an external battery sour timelapsing consumes a lot of power.

  • To fully participate in the classroom session, please bring a laptop computer with Lightroom and LRTimelapse already installed (both offer free trials for new customers).

  • Appropriate clothing for mountain weather in the Colorado Rockies. Temps can be as high as the 70s (˚F) in the day and in the 20s at night with anything from blue skies to heavy rain, fog, or snow. Long underwear, down-clothing, rain gear, wool, and waterproof footwear are all suggested.

  • Please bring snacks and drinks for time spent in the field, many of the best times for shooting are around breakfast and dinner so normal eating schedules are often disrupted. I typically have a late breakfast after shooting and an early or late dinner depending on shooting conditions.

Requirements:

  • A basic understanding of your camera and its operation as well as your other gear. If you're new to photography please take an intro-to-photography class before joining, as we'll be focused on the creation of timelapse sequences.

  • The ability to hike short trail distances (3 miles and under) in the mountains at elevations above 5000ft. The best way to acclimate is to arrive in Colorado a couple days early. Any hiking to locations will be at a moderate pace but require basic physical fitness; please do not sign-up if you're unable to meet these requirements. I've had students of all ages and body types able to meet these requirements with home training as simple as hiking multiple times per week with their camera pack.

FAQs

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

To keep the costs of the workshop down official transportation is not included. Getting to locations is done as a group with students taking turns carpooling and riding in my 4runner. This has never been an issue and actually ends up being a great way to meet and interact with other participants during non-instruction time. We will be walking to some locations in and around town.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
